Fort Morgan sits at the far western tip of the peninsula, about a 40-minute drive from most of our Gulf Shores properties, and it’s the pick for guests who want a change of pace from the beach for an afternoon. Built in the 1830s to guard the mouth of Mobile Bay, the fort played a central role in the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, and its brick casemates and pentagon-shaped walls are still largely intact for self-guided walking tours.
The on-site museum lays out the fort’s history from its construction through both World Wars, when it was still in active use, and outside you can wander the grounds, climb parts of the fortification, and get a good look at the shipping traffic entering Mobile Bay. It’s a quieter, shadier outing than a beach day, and the kids who like exploring tunnels and stairwells tend to enjoy it as much as the history-minded adults.
Admission is inexpensive and charged per person, hours run into early evening for most of the year, and the drive out along Fort Morgan Road is scenic in its own right, passing dunes and marshland on the way. If you’re staying on the Gulf Shores side and want a half-day break from the sand, this is one of the easiest ways to fill it, and it pairs naturally with lunch back in town afterward.
