Grotto Falls is the one waterfall hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where you actually walk behind the falls, not just alongside them, which makes it a standout even in a park with dozens of waterfalls to choose from. It sits along the Trillium Gap Trail off the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, just a few minutes outside downtown Gatlinburg, making it one of the easiest genuine hikes to reach from most of our Gatlinburg-area properties.
The hike to the falls and back is about 2.6 miles round trip with a moderate, steady climb through old-growth hemlock forest, generally taking two to three hours at a comfortable pace. It’s shaded nearly the entire way, which makes it a good option even on warmer summer afternoons, and the trail is popular enough that mornings or weekdays are the best bet if you want a quieter experience. Sturdy shoes are worth it, the rocks behind the falls get slick, and afternoon storms are common in summer, so an early start is generally the better plan.
There’s no fee for the trail itself, but the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a narrow, seasonal one-way loop that closes in winter, so it’s worth checking conditions before you go. Parking at the Trillium Gap trailhead is limited and fills up by mid-morning on busy days. It’s a short enough drive from Gatlinburg that guests often pair it with the rest of the Roaring Fork loop, making for a half-day outing without ever leaving the park.
